Maggie Mackay: a poem

Void

Father hanged himself

perhaps above

the washhouse mangle,

or in the orchard maybe,

dressed in apple blossom.

You're wondering if I miss him,

if I miss his hand on my arm,

if his voice is fading.

It's in the sparrow's call,

ten chisel clangs,

a bicycle bell.

Maggie Mackay loves family history, which she winds into her poems. Her pamphlet, The Heart of the Run, is published by Picaroon Poetry. Her full collection, A West Coast Psalter, comes out March 2021. She is a reviewer for www.sphinxreview.co.uk.
